The church ofSt. John the Baptist

The church ofSt. John the Baptist is the main accent of the old town of PlungÄ—. As the town grew a wooden church of St.John the Baptist was build in 1797. In that time PlungÄ— parish was one of the richest in bishorpic of Samogitia. On September 24th, 1933 a new brick church was consecrated in PlungÄ—. The old wooden church, after having stood for 136 years was destroved in 1934.

In 1903 Duchess Marija OginskienÄ— Invited nun from Cracow and in secret, hiding from the Tsarist authoristies, started educating yaoung girls. Mari de Grand, a senior nun from France, informed the priest of PlungÄ— about her wish to build a grotto of Lourdes. In 1905 from France the town was sent a statue of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin, which was mounted on a stone under the open sky. In 1906 a grotto was built with the money donated by the locasl population. The statue was placed in the grotto and concencated on September 7th.
The chapel of All Saints

Since 1806 PlungÄ— belonged to Count Zubovas. In 1850 Zubovas build a brick belfry in PlungÄ— and later on, in 1958, he built a big chapel of All Saints in the cemetery where noble people were buried.
The church ofSt. Peter and Paulius Disciple

The country-side district is almost in the center of the region, to the east of PlungÄ—. The residents of the nearby village of Stalgas Petras and PetronÄ—lÄ— Stoniai gave as a present 15 ha of land for building a church. In 1918 priest of PlungÄ— Povilas Pukis took care of the construction of the present wooden church. The timber was given as a present by duchess M.OginskienÄ—. It was decided to give the place where the church stood the name of StalgÄ—nai.
The church of St. Michael the Archangel

Rietavas, town in western Lithuania (Samogitia), 53 km east of the Baltic port city of Klaipeda. Making Rietavas his residence, Prince Iranaeus Oginski built a palace and laid out a 60-ha park at his estate. The town’s centre was replanted, its streets were straightened and widened. The church of St. Michael the Archangel was built during 1853-1874, one of the largest in Lithuania.
The church of St. Stanislovas the Martyr’s

The first wooden church was built in 1644, in 1776 the rights of a parish were granted. In 1900 duke Mykolas Oginskis together with the parishioners and priest Vincentas Jarulaitis built the present brick St. Stanislovas the Martyr’s church according to the drawings of Swedish architect K.Straudman. The altars in it are carved of wood, the floor is made of square and hexagon pieces of oak. The tower of the church is beautiful, old-time wooden belfry is worth attention.
The Church of St. Anthony of Padua.

Monks Franciscans settled in the village of Pakutuvėnai by the Church of St. Anthony of Padua. Every summer various events take place there: evenings, church festivities, public prayers and others . Lots of people come to these events. The monks organize camps for drug – addicts, alkohol-addicts, people who look for peace of mind come here.
The church of St. Morkus
Šateikių k., Plungės r.
Å ateikiai, town in north-western Lithuania, 14 km Northwest of PlungÄ—. It originated in the 17th century alongside an estate which subsequently became the property of the Plateris family. One of its members built a new Gothic-style brick church in 1875; the beautiful stained-glass windows were destroyed in 1945 by a group of red Army soldiers.
The church of St. Apostle Mathew the Evangelist

Gintališkė Most churches of Plungė region were built in the18th century, Gintališkė in 1730. The construction of the wooden church of St. Apostle Mathew the Evangelist was founded by M.Pociejus in 1778, the church was re-built in 1845 and 1896. The pictures of the Christ’s road inside the church painted by the unknown painter in or about 1861 are really distinguished.

Plateliai, town in western Lithuania, 15 km north of Plunge, situated along lake Plateliai. Architectural valuables and the homestead of Plateliai manor are interesting. The church of squared timber built in 1744 is one of the oldest wooden churches of Lithuania. South from the church there is the park of Plateliai manor with manor homestead buildings dating back to the 19th century.
The church of St. Johannes Nepomuk
Beržoro k., Platelių sen., Plungės r.
Beržoras, village in western Lithuania, situated on the northern shore of Berzoras lake, 2 km south of Plateliai. The village church, a Roman Catholic church dedicated to St. Stanislavas, was built of hewn spruce logs in 1746; it is noteworthy architecturally and contains many valuable pieces of folk art. are located in the village and on the surrounding hills.
The church of Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin

Alsėdžiai, town in the province of Zemaitija (Samogitia) at the confluence of the tributary Sruoja and the Varduva river, 13 km northwest of Telsiai. The wooden Church of the Immaculate Conception, the first church of this name in Lithuania, was built in 1476. From then until the middle of the 19th century Alsedziai was a favourite residence of the bishops of Samogitia.
Samogitian Calvary

ŽemaiÄių Kalvarija (Samogitian Calvary) has been famous for the devotion days especially since the 17th century. People come here attracted by the Stations of the Cross as well as the picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the main altar of the town church. In 1637 Bishop George Tyszkiewicz (Tiskevicius) established the Dominican Friars there; for them he built a monastery, a church, and along the banks of the Varduva 19 chapels, each of them representing a particular stage of the Passion of Christ. Because of the Station of the Cross, completed in 1642, the locality came to be known as Zemaiciu Kalvarija (The Calvary of Samogitia). At about the same period a painting of the Madona and Child, brought from Rome and held to be miraculous, was installed over the main altar of the church. In a short while, the Calvary of Samogitia became a widely known shrine, attracting numerous visitors. In the annual feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (July 2), several tens of thousands made the pilgrimage to the shrine. The present brick church, built in 1824 and renovated after a fire in 1896, can hold up to 2,500 people.
