The valuables of church architecture in PlungÄ— region

The church ofSt. John the Baptist  

Vytauto g. 34, PlungÄ—

The church ofSt. John the Baptist is the main accent of the old  town of PlungÄ—. As the town grew a wooden church of St.John the Baptist was build in 1797. In that time PlungÄ— parish was one of the richest in bishorpic of Samogitia. On September 24th, 1933 a new brick church was consecrated in PlungÄ—. The old wooden church, after having stood for 136 years was destroved in 1934.

In 1903 Duchess Marija OginskienÄ— Invited nun from Cracow and in secret, hiding from the Tsarist authoristies, started educating yaoung girls. Mari de Grand, a senior nun from France, informed the priest of PlungÄ— about her wish to build a grotto of Lourdes. In 1905 from France the town was sent a statue of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin, which was mounted on a stone under the open sky. In 1906 a grotto was built with the money donated by the locasl population. The statue was placed in the grotto and concencated on September 7th.

 

 

The chapel of All Saints

Since 1806 PlungÄ— belonged to Count Zubovas. In 1850 Zubovas build a brick belfry in PlungÄ— and later on, in 1958, he built a big chapel of All Saints in the cemetery where noble people were buried.

The country-side district is almost in the center of the region, to the east of PlungÄ—. The residents of the nearby village of Stalgas Petras and PetronÄ—lÄ— Stoniai gave as a present 15 ha of land for building a church.  In 1918 priest of PlungÄ— Povilas Pukis took care of the construction of the present wooden church. The timber was given as a present by duchess M.OginskienÄ—. It was decided to give the place where the church stood the name of  StalgÄ—nai.

 

 

The church of St. Michael the Archangel

 

LaisvÄ—s g. 2a, Rietavas

 

Rietavas, town in western Lithuania (Samogitia), 53 km east of the Baltic port city of Klaipeda. Making Rietavas his residence, Prince Iranaeus Oginski built a palace and laid out a 60-ha park at his estate. The town’s centre was replanted, its streets were straightened and widened. The church of St. Michael the Archangel was built during 1853-1874, one of the largest in Lithuania.

 

 

The church of St. Stanislovas the Martyr’s

 

Liepų 1a, Kuliai, Plungės r.

 

The first wooden church was built in 1644, in 1776 the rights of a parish were granted.  In 1900 duke Mykolas Oginskis together with the parishioners and priest Vincentas Jarulaitis built the present brick St. Stanislovas the Martyr’s church according to the drawings of Swedish architect K.Straudman. The altars in it are carved of wood, the floor is made of square and hexagon pieces of oak. The tower of the church is beautiful, old-time wooden belfry is worth attention.

 

 

The Church of St. Anthony of Padua.

 

Pakutuvėnų k., Šateikių sen., Plungės r.

 

Monks Franciscans settled in the village of PakutuvÄ—nai by the Church of St. Anthony of Padua. Every summer various events take place there: evenings, church festivities, public prayers and others . Lots of people come to these events.  The monks organize camps for drug – addicts, alkohol-addicts, people who look for peace of mind come here.

 

 

The church of St. Morkus

 

Šateikių k., Plungės r.

 

Å ateikiai, town in north-western Lithuania, 14 km Northwest of PlungÄ—. It originated in the 17th century alongside an estate which subsequently became the property of the Plateris family. One of its members built a new Gothic-style brick church in 1875; the beautiful stained-glass windows were destroyed in 1945 by a group of red Army soldiers.

 

 

The church of St. Apostle  Mathew the Evangelist

 

Gintališkės k., Plungės r.

 

GintaliÅ¡kÄ— Most churches of PlungÄ— region were built in the18th  century,  GintaliÅ¡kÄ— in 1730. The construction of the  wooden church of St. Apostle  Mathew the Evangelist was founded by M.Pociejus in 1778, the church was re-built in 1845 and 1896. The pictures of the Christ’s road inside the church painted by the unknown painter in or about 1861 are really distinguished.

 

 

The church of St. Peter‘s and Povilas‘s

 

Didžioji g. 15, Plateliai, Plungės r.

 

Plateliai, town in western Lithuania, 15 km north of Plunge, situated along lake Plateliai. Architectural valuables and the homestead of Plateliai manor are interesting. The church of squared timber built in 1744 is one of the oldest wooden churches of Lithuania. South from the church there is the park of Plateliai manor with manor homestead buildings dating back to the 19th century.

 

 

The church of St. Johannes Nepomuk

 

Beržoro k., Platelių sen., Plungės r.

 

Beržoras, village in western Lithuania, situated on the northern shore of Berzoras lake, 2 km south of Plateliai. The village church, a Roman Catholic church dedicated to St. Stanislavas, was built of hewn spruce logs in 1746; it is noteworthy architecturally and contains many valuable pieces of folk art. are located in the village and on the surrounding hills.

 

 

The church of Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin

Alsėdžiai, town in the province of Zemaitija (Samogitia) at the confluence of the tributary Sruoja and the Varduva river, 13 km northwest of Telsiai. The wooden Church of the Immaculate Conception, the first church of this name in Lithuania, was built in 1476. From then until the middle of the 19th century Alsedziai was a favourite residence of the bishops of Samogitia.

 

 

Samogitian Calvary

ŽemaiÄių Kalvarija (Samogitian Calvary) has been famous for the devotion days especially since the 17th century. People come here attracted by the Stations of the Cross as well as the picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the main altar of the town church. In 1637 Bishop George Tyszkiewicz (Tiskevicius) established the Dominican Friars there; for them he built a monastery, a church, and along the banks of the Varduva 19 chapels, each of them representing a particular stage of the Passion of Christ. Because of the Station of the Cross, completed in 1642, the locality came to be known as Zemaiciu Kalvarija (The Calvary of Samogitia). At about the same period a painting of the Madona and Child, brought from Rome and held to be miraculous, was installed over the main altar of the church. In a short while, the Calvary of Samogitia became a widely known shrine, attracting numerous visitors. In the annual feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (July 2), several tens of thousands made the pilgrimage to the shrine. The present brick church, built in 1824 and renovated after a fire in 1896, can hold up to 2,500 people.

The tourist routs in Plateliai

 

Round Plateliai Lake
Travelling round Plateliai lake you can admire eye-catching hilly landscape, interesting tourist objects, comfortable campsites, clean water. It is a circular route (the length of it is 30 km).
If you choose this route you can visit the borough of Plateliai, the village of Beržoras, the exposition of militarism, private art gallery – creative workshop of L.Černiauskas, the mound of Užpelkiai, to see the wetland reserve of Pakastuva, hydrographical reserve of Laumalenka, botanical-zoological reserve of Paplatelė, botanical reserve of Juodupis, strict reserve of Plokštinė (we want to warn you that it prohibited to visit the last-mentioned one without the permission of the management of Žemaitija National Park).

 

Road of Sculptures
The road of sculptures (7,5 km long) is meant to honour famous Samogitian wood master Stanislovas Riauba. During celebration of his 100th anniversary modern wood carvers built wooden sculptures on the roadsides from Plateliai to S.Riauba’s native village of Godeliai. The road leads through impressive places: the borough of Plateliai, the landscape reserve of the village of Beržoras, the village of Godeliai with the museum of folk art and ethnography of Jonušai in it; further away there is Bukantė with memorial museum of Žemaitė in it.

 

From Plateliai past Mikytai, BarstyÄiai, Å arnelÄ— to ŽemaiÄių Kalvarija…
The northern part of the National Park is distinguished for abundance of archeological valuables, dark woods, hilly conformation. Chapels lean on roadsides, old Samogitian homesteads stand out in the shades of trees...
Travelling in the northern part of the National park (60 km) you can visit places of interest of the borough of Plateliai, the mound of Užpelkiai, the old village of MaÄiÅ«kiai, the archeological valuables of Mikytai, the borough of BarstyÄiai with wooden church built in 1788, the biggest in Lithuania stone of BarstyÄiai in the village of PuokÄ—, motherland of poet Vytautas MaÄernis and his grave, the mound of Å arnelÄ—, the valuables of the borough of Žemaicių Kalvarija (urban reserve), the landscape reserve of Mikytai and Å arnelÄ— and other valuables of natural and cultural heritage.

Cognitive paths in Plateliai

 

 

Å eirÄ— nature path
Å eirÄ— nature path is close to the borough of Plateliai in Å eirÄ— landscape reserve. Walking along 4,1 km path you will see plants, mushrooms and animals peculiar to this land. This path will lead you to Gaudupis marsh. On your way there you will pass dark fur-groves, groves of the deciduous, nesting places of birds, nesting-boxes of bats, ant-hills. Not far from here there is the Piktežeris guarded by a wooden devil. On your way back you will walk along the coast of the lake. 
 

Plokštinė cognitive path
Plokštinė cognitive path (3,2 km) is in the territory of the former military base where militaristic plans and the nature interweave.
Walking along the path you will see the relicts of the fence of the military base, nesting – boxes for the smallest animals – bats, you will cross the fur-grove and birch-grove, will admire the hilly conformation, ice-free spring of Pilelis which is a natural monument. Sounds of the forest will accompany you. You will be tempted by blessings of the forest, campsites will invite you to have a rest.

 

Cognitive path „Travel of the Acorn and the Chesnut in the park of Plateliai manor“
Cognitive path „Travel of the Acorn and the Chesnut in the park of Plateliai manor“ is for younger tourists. You will be accompanied by naughty Chesnut who wants to break a twig, to pick a flower or even to kick an ant-hill! Luckily a good Acorn stops him in time and teaches him proper behavior in the nature.

Cognitive path in the town of PlungÄ—


The area where Plunge is now situated has been settled by the people in the 5th – 1 st centuries B. C. The name of „Plungė“ together with the name of „Gandinga“ appeared in written sources in the 16th century. King Stanislovas Augustas signed the document of privileges on January 3, 1792 grating Magdeburg‘s rights to the town of Plungė. Since 1806 the town – dwellers of Plunge and the estate were the property of Count Zubovas. Later on, the family of Oginskis bought Plunge estate in 1873. They rearranged the park which ocupied 62 hectares, built a palace and established an orchestra school there as well. During the period of 1919 – 1940 Plungė was expanding rapidly. A lot of new houses were built on both banks of the river Babrungas. In 1932 the railway was built in Plunge, which influenced the growth of the town a great deal. Plunge became an industrial town after World War II. Today the town occupies 1142,5 hectares and its population is about 25,000 people.

The Samogitian museum of arts

 

Grand and wonderful ensemble of duke‘s Michael Oginski manor and mysterious park surrounding it are that special places where the time preserved not only tangible, but also spiritual heritage. It is one of the most dramatic and the best preserved ensembles of manors of the 19th century in Lithuania.
The Samogitian museum of arts is established in Plunge‘s dukes Oginskiai Palace.
The main collection consists of works donated by artists and other collectors.
There is also an impressive library, where valuable books by the historian Zenonas Ivinskis and other Samogitian writers are kept.
